For the hours before midnight
New Year's Eve is a long evening for children. Put a stack of pages and a jar of crayons on a side table and let them color party hats and fireworks while the adults talk. The clock at midnight page doubles as a countdown: color one mark on the clock face each hour, and the last one at the big moment.
A 2027 page and a January 1 page
Two pages mark the new year itself: big outlined numbers 2027 with stars around them, and a calendar page for January 1. Children can write one wish for the year under either one, and the page goes on the fridge in the morning.
For toddlers and preschool
Two and three year olds do best with big shapes and few details, which is how every picture here is drawn. The balloons, the star, the present and the party hat are the easiest. Older children can copy the name at the top and add their own details: stripes on the hat, more sparks on the sparkler, a face on the moon.
